First generation Porsche 911 (original 911), 1963-1973

Engines

For a time, Porsche offered the 911 as a six-cylinder boxer with varying power outputs, as well as the 912 with its four-cylinder boxer – an offering designed to appeal to 356 customers.

Bodystyles

In terms of bodystyles, the original Porsche 911 was offered as a Coupé or, from 1967, as the Targa convertible.

Innovations

In the model years from 1963 to 1972, Porsche engineers developed innovations such as the three-part safety steering system, internally vented disc brakes, front and rear spoilers, the removable folding roof of the Targa and a folding plastic rear window.

Second generation 911 (G-Series), 1973-1989

Engines

Porsche initially opted for the six-cylinder boxer with 2.7 litres of displacement and Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection.

Bodystyles

Porsche offered 2+2-seater models in the form of the Coupé, Targa (from 1973), Cabriolet (from 1983) and Speedster (from 1988).

Innovations

In the 911 G-Series, Porsche fitted a turbocharger in the 911 for the first time in 1974.

Design and model variants

The tunnel-shaped wings and integrated headlights and the flat bonnet continued to be the definitive style elements in the second-generation 911.

Third generation Porsche 911 (964), 1988-1994

Engines

For the 964, Porsche developed a new 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine.

Bodystyles and innovations

As with its predecessor, Porsche offered the car in Coupé, Targa, and Cabriolet variants and, from the 1993 model year, a Speedster version, which featured a chopped-down front windscreen.

Fourth generation Porsche 911 (993), 1993-1998

Engines

The power outputs of the six-cylinder boxer engines in this generations ranged from 272 PS in the Carrera versions to 450 PS in the 911 Turbo S of model year 1998 and the 911 Turbo fitted with a performance pack.

Bodystyles and innovations

Along with the Coupé and the Cabriolet (from early 1994), from 1996 Porsche once again sold a Targa version of the 993.

Fifth generation Porsche 911 (996), 1997-2005

Engines

Porsche engineers developed a completely new engine for the 996.

Bodystyles and innovations

Despite, or perhaps because of, the completely new design, Porsche continued to offer the 911 in the familiar Coupé, Cabriolet and, from 2002, Targa versions.

Design and model variants

The design of the 996 reinterpreted the classic lines of the 911 and yet was distinguished by a low cd value of 0.30.

Sixth generation Porsche 911 (997), 2004-2012

Engines

The 3.6-litre boxer engine in the 997 Carrera now delivered 325 PS, and the newly developed 3.8-litre engine of the Carrera S produced 355 PS.

Seventh generation Porsche 911 (991), 2011-2019

Engines

From a displacement of 3.4 litres, the 991 911 Carrera initially developed 350 PS.

Bodystyles and innovations

For the 991, customers could choose between a Coupé, a Cabriolet and a Targa (from 2014) with a wide roof bar made of brushed stainless steel.

Eighth generation Porsche 911 (992), 2018 - present

Eighth generation Porsche 911

“The eighth generation of the 911 is more powerful, more emotive and more efficient than its predecessor – with a wide range of digital features,” said Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche, at the presentation of the 992 in November 2018.

Engines

The six-cylinder boxer engines of the current generation work powerfully and efficiently to deliver the highest performance.

Bodystyles and innovations

Porsche has remained committed to the Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa bodystyles for more than 60 years, and this continues in the current-generation 992.
